Kristina Urberg '21 has been golfing since she was 8 years old, and on September 15 at Timber Ridge she won with the lowest score at her last official high school golf match.
"I was incredibly happy when I won," Urberg said. "I shot my best score for the back 9 and second best score for 9 holes ever. I have been working hard to improve my golf swing and short game throughout high school, so it was nice to see all the different aspects of my game come together."
Urberg's hard work also paid off over the weekend at Sectionals, where she was one of three golfers who will advance to Regionals.
As a youngster, Urberg was involved with golf at Fort Wayne Country Club, where she played in the Junior PGA program. She doesn't plan to play golf competitively after high school, but plans to play with family and friends for the rest of her life. Urberg will certainly miss her days on the Canterbury golf team and her coach, Nikki LeRose.
"(LeRose) has helped me so much with my technique and my mental game, and she always encourages me while playing and during practice, even if I'm having a rough day," Urberg said.
The feeling is mutual, as LeRose said even her college golf memories don't compare to the joy she experiences coaching golfers like Urberg.
"The progress I have seen her make both as a student and as an athlete is inspiring," LeRose said.
LeRose specifically remembers Urberg missing Regionals last year by only one stroke. Urberg viewed the opportunity as a way to improve. "She worked like a machine during the off season," LeRose said. "And she worked even harder during the season in hopes of qualifying for Regionals this year."
Sure enough, Urberg qualified for Regionals.
"She wanted it more than everyone else," LeRose said. "Which goes to show you that it is not over until it is over."
At Canterbury. Urberg is also a member of the swim team, student ambassadors, Model UN, and is one of the editors-in-chief of the Untitled.
