Canterbury Chess Teams Shine at State Championship

Canterbury School is celebrating an exciting achievement after its young chess players delivered outstanding performances at the Indiana State Chess Championship held on Saturday, March 21 in Hammond, Indiana.

Leading the way was Canterbury’s Grade 3 and Under “A” Team, which earned the title of State Champions. The championship team was made up of Grade 3 students Jashan Bola, Caroline Kinne, Nandika Rajaram, and Eliana Nwankwo. Their teamwork, strategy, and focus helped secure the top spot in a highly competitive field.

Canterbury’s “B” Team also impressed, finishing in 10th place overall. The team included Grade 2 students Reid McMillan, Grade 1 students Charlotte Kinne and Noah Bohnstedt, and Kindergartner Juliette Kinne. Their strong performance highlights the depth of talent in Canterbury’s chess program, even among its youngest players.

At the high school level, Canterbury’s team placed 7th in the state. The team was led by Jason Zhang, Gavin Lass, Vivek Apuri, and Kellan Gupta, who competed against some of the best players in Indiana.

Additional Canterbury students also represented the school well at the state competition. Grade 6 students Alex Chen and Rafay Najib, along with Grade 4 student Kwesi Ackon, qualified for the event and contributed to the school’s strong overall showing.

Congratulations to all of Canterbury’s chess players on an incredible day of competition and achievement!
