Dear Canterbury Community,

As we near the end of the school year, I wanted to share a brief update about Canterbury's plans for the opening of school in the fall. The State of Indiana has mandated that all K-12 institutions remain closed for on campus instruction through June 30th. Governor Holcomb has indicated that a decision about opening K-12 schools for the fall will be made in July. Based on the "Back on Track Indiana" plan released by the governor's office, we remain confident that Canterbury will be able to open its doors in August. We know that instruction on campus, if permitted by the State of Indiana, must prioritize the health and well-being of our students, faculty, and parent community. To this effect, I want to share some strategic initiatives that Canterbury's Leadership Team has discussed in recent weeks:

  • The formation of a Pandemic Health and Wellness Committee, led by Mr. Ottenweller
  • A more synchronous remote learning experience, with attention to the need to mitigate screen time (if such a modality is necessary)
  • Class-size limitations that will support social-distancing requirements, including the hiring of additional staff, if necessary
  • The possibility of a hybrid model of on-campus instruction and distance learning, in the event that the government limits our occupancy capacity in buildings
  • Sanitation stations placed throughout campus and a robust campaign to educate students, and the broader community, on best hygiene practices
  • The examination of what types of PPE will be needed to safeguard those on campus
  • Procedures for monitoring COVID-19 infections in the community, including protocols for what to do in the (likely) event that someone tests positive
  • Learning continuity plans for families who are not yet comfortable sending children back to campus

The list above, while not exhaustive, is indicative of Canterbury's engagement in advanced planning in anticipation of next school year. While we do not have all of the answers at this point, my commitment to you is to communicate frequently, consistently, and honestly about Canterbury's plans moving forward. I will host a Zoom call for parents on May 27th at 6:30pm and look forward to speaking with many of you then.

Cordially,

David Jackson
