November 2019 Fine Arts Newsletter LINK Day and the Arts
On Link Day, science and art combined for 8th grade students visiting Eagle Marsh with the addition of a mindful listening sound survey. As we traversed the wetlands, students carried a hand-held recorder and picked up sounds that will be incorporated later this year in a composition by Canterbury alum, Patrick O'Malley (pictured below with Colleen Tan and Janet MacKay-Galbraith). Patrick will weave sounds of water, mud puddles, crackling leaves, wind through the grass, birds and background voices and laughter into a work that will be part of the artist residency and public performance titled Rivers Empyrean by the Fifth House Ensemble.
As part of their residency, members of Fifth House (pictured below) and Patrick will be engaging students from Early Childhood through high school on deep listening and compositional skills. Their time at Canterbury will culminate with a public concert on April 28 in Summers Auditorium at which point 8th grade students can hear the result of their contributions to Patrick's piece. This concert will be open to the public - tickets available soon!
