![]() October 2019 Fine Arts Newsletter ![]() Good Morning Canterbury Families,
Your students are being introduced to new concepts in all of our classes and are given the time to practice and repeat toward mastery.
Canterbury Arts in the Community ![]() Canterbury students Frank Chen and Phobos Hoang (not pictured) were recognized for their contribution to Friends of the Rivers community art project, which raises money for educational field trips for area students. Canterbury paddles were displayed for World Rivers Day on September 29 and raised $5,000 for the cause. Way to go! (Also pictured, Canterbury's Vicki Junkwright.) ![]() June Rambo, Middle School Special Projects Coordinator, and her husband Kevin Torwelle, Math and Drama 7 teacher, took part in the inaugural production of Parlor City Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in Bluffton. June played Benvolio, and Kevin played Romeo. It was their first time acting together, despite meeting through theatre and being in several shows together. Thank you! Your donations from last year's Laughing Cavalier allowed the Fine Arts Department to bring in Gina Cerimele-Mechley, one of the few female certified teachers with the Society of American Fight Directors. Gina worked with students on LINK Day, in Shakespeare classes, and is choreographing combat scenes for the high school musical, The Pirates of Penzance! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Speech & Debate: Middle School, High School, College, and Beyond! "Say you're sorry." How often have we heard this from a well-meaning adult to kids who were fighting? I have to admit, as a teacher I've done it often myself. Kids do things without thinking. All the time. Perhaps it's because someone did something bad to them and they want to retaliate, or maybe it's simply an impulse. Regardless, when we see kids mess up, we call them out. In the Classroom ![]() ![]() In September, Mrs. Heather Gillan's Kindergarten Prep students explored the artist Wassily Kandinsky, who is often credited as the pioneer of abstract art. Students began by reading The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock and then spent time drawing the sounds and colors while listening to music. We love seeing our Canterbury students take an interest in the arts at such a young age! Did you know? Three Canterbury orchestra students competed in the ACPL K-Pop contest on Saturday, September 14 and earned First Place with their group. Congratulations to Megan True (Viola '23), Amber Choi (Violin '23), and Ashley Choi (Violin '25). We are proud of these young ladies exercising their talents in a diverse and unique way!
The Speech and Debate Team made its 15th Nationals appearance over the summer in Dallas, Texas. Two Speech and Debate alumni, Aliza Adhami and Bob Beideck, came to the tournament to show their support.
