Dear Canterbury Community,

As the vernal equinox approaches and with it the advent of Spring, we have seen a significant decrease in the spread of COVID-19 throughout our state and region. While we are not yet past the pandemic, the fact that a majority of our teachers and staff have received initial vaccinations is a tremendous blessing. Given the current trajectory of the virus, I want to issue some updates regarding COVID-19 as we transition through the Spring into a more typical school year in the Fall:

  • Canterbury will officially suspend the Yellow Phase of our Reopening Plan as an operating guideline moving forward. This means that decisions regarding events, spectators, distancing, masks, etc., will be conducted on an ad hoc basis.

  • We will continue to report COVID-19 cases in the community only when the school is required to file a report with the local Department of Health.

  • Staff members or siblings will not be required to stay out of school when a COVID-19 test is pending, as long as the individual is asymptomatic.

  • We will allow a seven-day quarantine (if no symptoms manifest) with a Negative PCR COVID-19 test on day five, six, or seven after exposure or a rapid test on day eight.

  • We will not require students to quarantine if they are exposed to a positive case wearing masks outdoors, provided that they are asymptomatic.

  • Canterbury will no longer require temperature checks for visitors, but will require the symptom screening form.

  • After spring break, grade level classes in the Lower School will be permitted to play together during recess.

  • After spring break, Middle School teachers will return to their classrooms and students will travel from class to class more frequently. Desks will be moved to three feet apart, consistent with the latest CDC guidelines.

  • We will explore off-campus field trips, provided that they can be done safely.

To better prepare for these changes and for the final stretch of the school year, there will be a teacher workday on Monday, April 12.

In reflecting upon this school year, I have been immeasurably impressed with the resilience of our community. To say that Canterbury is strong is a profound understatement. Thank you for all that you have done to make this school year such a successful one.

Cordially,

David Jackson
