Speech and Debate

Developing students who seek to understand multiple points of view is an important part of the Canterbury School curriculum.

Though the team is consistently competitive at local, state, and national levels, we're committed to the philosophy that speech and debate competition is valuable for all students, not only those who choose to make it their primary activity. We strive to maintain a program that supports the most committed in scaling the loftiest heights, while providing opportunities for all students to improve their skills and test themselves as appropriate, given their interest and other commitments. And, above all, we hope students will seek to understand others, whether discussing world affairs or personal choices.

At the High School level, students can take Speech Communications, where they learn the fundamentals of speaking, audience analysis, topic selection, organization, practice and performance. This course is available for college credit.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Speech Team, competing in speech meets in the areas of drama, humor, extemporaneous, broadcast, impromptu, discussion, prose and poetry. Students meet with the speech coach during free periods and after school, and travel with the team to compete locally, statewide, and nationally, when the opportunity arises.
