At Canterbury, the early school years are filled with discovery, connection, and possibility. Our Lower School nurtures the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and morally—in a joyful environment where students feel known, valued, and ready to take on new challenges.

Through strong relationships, thoughtful instruction, and hands-on exploration, children build essential skills, discover their interests, and develop the confidence to contribute. It’s a foundation for a lifelong love of learning—and a life grounded in purpose, passion, and meaning.

Learning that challenges and inspires

Small classes help teachers understand each child’s strengths and support their next steps. Flexible reading and math groups provide appropriate challenge, while dedicated reading, math, and STEM specialists deepen learning. Science investigations, creative projects, and real-world problem solving encourage students to ask thoughtful questions, test ideas, and explain their thinking.

Art, music, drama, physical education, world languages, religion, library, and chess bring new perspectives to every week.

Adventures that bring learning to life

At Canterbury, learning connects subjects and extends beyond the classroom. Students step into stories at the Grade 1 Fairy Tale Ball, explore colonial life in Grade 2, investigate innovations in Grade 3, and become entrepreneurs in Grade 4. Field studies and interdisciplinary projects invite children to explore, collaborate, and make discoveries that stay with them.

A community where every child belongs

Caring teachers, peer buddies, and cross-grade “Families” help children build lasting relationships. Students practice empathy, responsibility, and emotional regulation through daily interactions and guidance from our School Counselor. Guided by Canterbury’s motto, Integrity in All Things, they learn that character grows through everyday choices and opportunities to serve others.

Room to discover new passions

From stringed instruments and the annual musical to passion projects and service learning, students have many ways to explore their interests and share their talents. Enrichment, Extended Day, and summer programs offer further opportunities to grow as artists, athletes, and scholars.
