Cav Open Golf Tournament

Thank you to everyone for your support during the 2016 tournament.

A beautiful day to raise funds for athletics!

Monday, May 23, 2016, proved to be a hot day for golf and an even hotter day to raise $22,000 for athletics! Eighty-four players, including 18 alums, teed off at Chestnut Hills Golf Club to support Canterbury athletic teams that have competed hard all year. Once again the event winners with a score of 56 included alumni Dan McEachern ’92, Matt Machall ’92, and Grant Shurtz ’91. A successful Senior Cav 9-hole scramble in the morning included 20 players: current seniors and their parents. This year’s winning team included Matt and Jack Wojewuczki ’16 and Bob and Jimmy Schantz ’16.

The funds raised will be put to good use across all grade levels to purchase athletic equipment, supplies and to underwrite professional development opportunities for coaches and athletic staff.

Even though the tournament is over, we still have items on the athletics wish list. We are still taking donations in honor of your favorite team or coaching staff.

Funds raised are used to help with major purchases for the athletic department and to help underwrite training and professional development opportunities for our coaches. The event has funded scoreboards, scoring tables and sound systems for the High School and Middle School gyms, padding under the baskets, soccer goals and more.

The growth of Canterbury’s athletics program over the past four decades is a direct result of talented students, dedicated coaches and your commitment to supporting their progress.

In 1978 the first “home” games were played on the YWCA field and the first HS soccer team included seventh and eighth-graders to fill the squad, with only 10 jerseys among the 15 players.

Today, more than 80 percent of Canterbury students from grades 5-12 compete on teams in interscholastic

competitions. Canterbury fields more than 50 teams in 11 different sports, with students filling literally hundreds of roster spots each year throughout the fall, winter and spring seasons.

Canterbury’s philosophy of athletic inclusion reflects the belief that athletics is an integral part of a balanced education and thus should remain accessible to as many students as possible. While students work to develop athletics skills they also learn life skills including discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Special thanks to Niki Carver and Tammi Pavelec for their assistance before and during the event. The athletic and development departments wish to thank all the volunteers, participants, sponsors and donors whose generosity made this event a success! Mark your calendar now for Cavalier Open 2017, scheduled for Monday, May 22, 2017.
