  • Kate's Kart book drive begins next week

Krista Layman will be speaking to Lower and Middle School students about Kate’s Kart on Wednesday, February 8, during chapel. Our book drive will run from then until February 16. Kate's Kart is a nonprofit organization that supplies free books to hospitalized children to keep for their enjoyment. The goal of Kate’s Kart is to promote literacy and encourage children, and their families, to read on an ongoing basis. Kate's Kart was founded in 2008 by the Layman family in memory of their daughter, Katherine Anne Layman (affectionately known to family and friends as "Baby Kate").

Any person under the age of 18 who is hospitalized, visiting a sibling, or waiting in a waiting room is given the opportunity to choose a book from the Kart to keep and take home. Parents of newborns and young children are encouraged to choose a book to read to their child in the hospital and then take the book to add to their home library.

In just over three years, since its beginning in June of 2008, Kate’s Kart has distributed more than 38,482 books and has grown to service 16 area hospitals, plus several pediatric offices. Several Canterbury teachers and High School students are Kate’s Kart volunteers at local hospitals.

Canterbury School was one of the first schools to hold a Kate’s Kart fundraiser. In honor of Judy and Ted King (Baby Kate’s grandparents) we now hold an annual book drive/fund raiser. Ted is a High School science teacher and Judy works in food services.

  • Teams to watch in girls basketball tourney

    From the News-Sentinel:

CLASS 1A: No. 1 Canterbury (18-2) – No team in Indiana is more difficult to game-plan for than the Canterbury Cavaliers.

Canterbury is the highest-scoring team in the history of girls basketball in Indiana, tallying more than 82 points per game (Kokomo holds the state record of 80.5 per game in 1992-1993 season), and they can score in so many ways.

They have balance. Three players are averaging 17 points or better, led by sophomore forward Kindell Fincher. The 5-10 Fincher scores around 23 per game and is among the state's leading rebounders. Bailey Farley, who recently committed to play college ball at Loyola University Chicago, scores around 20 a game and freshman guard Darby Maggard adds about 17 per game.

Canterbury had one game this year where all three, plus junior Aaliyah Gaines, all scored over 20 points, and fifth starter senior Mattie Troxel scored in double figures.

Canterbury plays what is considered to be the most challenging 1A schedule in the state. The Cavaliers have played seven 4A teams, including state-ranked South Side, Snider, and Elkhart Memorial. Despite the difficult schedule, Canterbury leads the state in average margin, scoring over 28 points per game more than they allow.

The Cavaliers like to play a wide-open, up-and-down game, and will try to control the tempo with full-court defense and pushing the ball up the court in transition.

What is the one problem that could haunt the Cavaliers? Depth. Besides reserve Emma Hyndman, few Cavaliers have seen any significant varsity minutes. With the fast-pace and aggressive defense, the possibility of fatigue or foul trouble could derail the Cavaliers as they look for their 4th state championship in five years.

  • Bailey Farley has verbally committed to play basketball at Loyola University

Bailey Farley has verbally pledged to play college basketball for Coach Eric Simpson and the Loyola University of Chicago Ramblers. Bailey had multiple scholarship offers from schools in seven states. Bailey is averaging 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game so far this season.

She has developed a strong relationship with the Loyola staff over the last year and feels like this is the 'perfect fit' for her college experience. In addition to the strong basketball program and great staff, the quality of the cademic education that Loyola offers was a big factor in this decision, as well as going to school in Chicago and being relatively close to family.

Lady Cav's Coach Scott Kreiger said, “We are pleased and proud of Bailey's decision to attend Loyola University to play basketball. She has worked hard to earn this opportunity and we look forward to following her contributions to the Rambler program.”
