Canterbury Food Service strives to provide students with nutritional lunches and a la carte items. Our goal is to offer healthy, good-tasting hot lunches, supplements for student brownbag lunches for KP-12, plus midmorning ala carte items for 5-12.
HOT LUNCH
Hot lunch may be purchased:
-
Yearly
September through June, payment due August 8. This is the most economical plan.
-
Four Payment Plan
Payments due August 8, October 21, January 6, and March 16. If you opt for this plan please put payment dates on your home calendar. Reminders are in the newsletter but notices are not sent unless you are delinquent with a payment.
-
Weekly
When purchasing weekly, purchase for the entire week. Bring money daily if not buying all days. Bookkeeping would be a nightmare trying to keep track of only selected days. Payment due no later than Friday of previous week
-
Daily
Daily hot lunches may be purchased at both cafeterias. Lunch may be purchased on a daily basis with cash or a check, not charged. Students are to bring money with them when coming for lunch. Do not turn money in at the office.
Why should I purchase the complete hot lunch?
- Lunches are balanced and include fruits and vegetables that are often omitted if purchasing ala carte.
- Seconds are available for students who are still hungry
HOT LUNCH SUBSTITUTIONS
Lower School hot lunch students may choose to substitute a peanut butter and jelly, cheese, turkey, or ham sandwich, or a cup of soup for the main entrée. Middle School may, in addition, substitute a bagel and some form of protein (cream cheese, peanut butter, yogurt, string cheese, cheese cubes). At the MS on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, grades 3-8 also may substitute a side salad with meat. High School students have a wider variety of substitutions, including sandwiches, wraps, and salads.
Students who forget their packed lunch will be given a substitute lunch consisting of a peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwich, small soup, fruit, and milk or juice. Payment of $2.50 is expected the next day. This is the only lunch that may be charged. Regular lunches may not be charged
SECONDS
Hot lunch students may have seconds (soup, peanut butter or cheese sandwiches, leftovers, the main entrée; if available), if they have eaten their main entrée and taken “No Thank You Bite” of the side items. Seconds are also available on fruit and/or vegetables.
PIZZA
Pizza will be served the first day of each week that school is in session. The first day for pizza will be Monday, August 22. Hot lunch on pizza day includes two slices for 5-12. Students grade KP-4 may opt for 1 or 2 pieces. See pricing sheet.
Students who do not get hot lunch may order just slices of pizza on pizza day. Students are encouraged to prepay for a pizza card to insure availability. A pizza card is good for pizza only, not the complete hot lunch.
Hungry Howie’s and Papa John’s Pizza will be served this year, beginning with Hungry Howie’s.
Ala CARTE CARDS
(formerly known as snack cards)
This card has been renamed since it can be used to purchase any item in the cafeteria such as milk, ala carte items, and individual items from the daily menu. Older students may get an ala carte card and design their own lunch. The entire card in the High School and Middle School must be used at one time, either break or lunch. If the total amount is not used on a specific day nothing carries over. Cashiers remind students to take something for after school if students do not spend the entire amount. The amount purchased may be divided between multiple cards. If you desire to split the cards, please indicate the amount on each card when ordering. Please confer with your child about the card amount to purchase and how the cards are to be divided.
Fruits, vegetables, soup, bagels, yogurt, cheese, cereals and healthy snacks will be available for purchase by all students.
Lower School parents are encouraged to limit the amount of money sent with children for ala carte items to ensure that the main meal is eaten. There is always a dessert provided with a hot lunch. Lower School only comes to the cafeteria once a day, during lunch, so it is recommended that Lower School students who are purchasing hot lunch do not have an extra ala carte card because they tend to consume the snack and dessert first and do not finish the main meal. They may bring cash for a special occasion.
Prepaid ala carte cards are available in all divisions, are discounted, and can be combined with cash to purchase items.
