Stymied by the strange language sometimes spoken at Canterbury? Have EDC and NOG dissolved into alphabet soup? You’re not alone! All of us new to the school (and some of us who have been here a while but were too embarrassed to ask) wonder what it all means. Here, for the uninitiated, are some clues:

Above and Beyond Care
One of the Early Childhood extended day care programs, also known as ABC. ABC is offered 3:15-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 3:15-5:30 p.m. Friday. It is a multi-age group providing a variety of less structured, developmentally appropriate activities.

The generic term for extended day care offered in Middle School.
annual fund
The annual fundraiser supporting the school’s operating budget.
assignment planner
Used in Middle School.
Buzz Book
School directory with the phone numbers and addresses of Canterbury families and staff; available in late September.
Canterbury Clubhouse
A location for Early Childhood programs adjacent to the Covington Road campus
Canterbury Kids
An Early Childhood program for 2-year-olds.
Canterbury Today
The quarterly magazine of Canterbury School mailed to the school community and available online.
CART
Cavaliers All Read Together, a time set aside for students and teachers to read together.
Cavaliers
In addition to being the school mascot, this is an Early Childhood program for 3-year-olds.
Chapel
A daily period of reflection, learning and presentations.
commons / the commons
Another name for the lunchroom. Also lowercase auditorium and gymnasium.

EDC
extended day care, a Lower School after-school supervision program; takes place in the room also known as the EDC across from the Lower School library
extended care program
This is the generic term Early Childhood uses for its extended day care (Before-School Care, Lunch Bunch, Studio Time and ABC).
Fall Family Picnic
An annual all-school event sponsored by admissions.
Family Fun Run and Walk / Tin Can 5K
An annual event open to the public to raise money for Associated Churches Food Bank.
foundation board / Canterbury Foundation Board
Oversees the school’s endowment, which supports the school’s mission and programs.

Used in Early Childhood.

Kindergarten Prep / K-Prep
A bridge for some students between Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten.

An annual fundraising dinner and auction in January supporting the Canterbury endowment.
Lunch Bunch
Lunch Bunch is offered to Early Childhood students 11 a.m.-1 p.m. each day. Children enjoy games, outdoor play, stories, crafts and a sack lunch from home with their friends.

An annual weeklong event open to the public at which books are selected and presented, art is demonstrated and sold, and lessons are offered on various cultures.

Summer Camp Discoveries Fair
An annual March event open to the public at which camp directors make available their materials to families.
Summer to Shine
A series of camps offered each summer for students as well as the community.
test board
The test board is where test dates are posted in the MS. The HS has dedicated testing days.
The 1977 Society
A group formed to recognize those who have made plans for Canterbury in their estates. The name refers to the year in which Canterbury was founded.
work crew
Involves all students in daily assignments to assist in maintaining the school building and grounds.
