Being Kind: To Yourself and Others

From staff reports

Mrs. Jennie Crandal's Grade 8 Health Class has spent a lot of time this quarter learning about mental health. But aside from just learning about it, they have participated in some projects to help the mental health of themselves and those around them.

One project was "Kindness Rocks," where students painted palm-sized rocks with inspirational quotes and sayings. The rocks were placed in a basket for other students to grab whenever they need a pick-me-up.

To end the quarter, the Grade 8 students looked inward to consider their own mental health. They wrote down the negative things they think and say about themselves, and then threw the card of negative thoughts into a fire. Then, they had to write ten positive thoughts about themselves. Mrs. Crandal took five of those positive thoughts for each student and make them a special keepsake card.

"I mentioned how I write positive things on my mirror at home," Crandal says, "so I also gave each of them a chalk marker so they can do the same thing. It's all about positive thinking and being kind to ourselves and others."
