ABOUT: “Fort Wayne Through the Eyes of a Child”
Canterbury School Fort Wayne Book Project
This project began during the last half of the 2007-2008 school year and continues this school year. Lower School computer specialist Sabrina Minser is one of the faculty facilitating the project. “The Canterbury Lower School students learn about community by researching and writing about their own community – Fort Wayne,” said Mrs. Minser. “ Each classroom is researching, writing and illustrating an area or landmark of the Fort Wayne community. These writings and illustrations will culminate in a child friendly book about Fort Wayne, as seen through the eyes of children, that others could use in presenting Fort Wayne’s history to elementary level students.” The book will include photos, student drawings and descriptive paragraphs written by students.
As the idea was researched, faculty found there were few “kid friendly” print resources available about Fort Wayne points of interest and landmarks. To help the students get started on the book, they needed to do research. Linda Huge, Fort Wayne historian, gave a presentation at a Lower School chapel last spring. She gave students background about the history of Fort Wayne. Additionally faculty have put together an extensive kit of resources about Fort Wayne that is housed with the school’s “Culture Kits” in the Lower School Learning Center.
Faculty hope more community leaders to visit with the children and share their expertise about Fort Wayne. They also hope to find underwriting to cover the cost of publication for the book.
