School begins August 23 at Canterbury School, but the Math classroom already has had a workout. For three days in August, Kindergarten through Grade 5 students had the opportunity to participate in the Math for Fun workshop, refreshing their math skills in fun and interesting ways before the school year starts. Kelly Madarang, Canterbury's math specialist, designed the program with a focus on interactive, hands-on math application. The campers practice essential equations, improve their spacial cognition and understanding of geometry using blocks and group-oriented activities, and learn to think about math creatively through stories. One of Mrs. Madarang's primary goals is to break down the fear of math often instilled in students at a very young age. The students are not afraid to try and fail, and are encouraged to learn from their mistakes.
