YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES
Middle School Speech involves individual student competitions at a number of meets throughout Indiana. A student can participate in any of 11 events and can attend any meet (four to six per year) that fits his or her schedule. Chess Club
Chess Club meets once a week throughout the year, and there are opportunities for competition. There is a membership fee.
Student Government
All students vote in their advisory group to select representatives for student government. All meetings of the Middle School student government take place during the school day.
Student Government Committees
A representative from each advisory is selected for each of the Spirit, Social, Building and Grounds, Service and Resource committees. Chairs are selected by the committees. Spirit 56
This series of social events provides students in grades 5 and 6 with opportunities to cheer on athletic teams. Events are held on various dates throughout the sports seasons and include a light supper, games and cheering.
Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Socials
Socials occasionally are held on Friday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m.
FIRST-QUARTER ACTIVITIES
Ensemble Rehearsal
Groups that might want to play at the Indiana State School Music Association competition, such as a string trio, percussion quartet or saxophone quartet, meet for extra coaching.
Family Fun Run/Walk
This event is open to students of all ages. It kicks off the weeklong collection of canned foods for the Associated Churches Food Bank.
Canned Food Drive
Students in grades 5-8 bring canned foods for the Associated Churches Food Bank.
Health Emphasis Week
This week of programs features special speakers in Chapel, healthy snacks during morning break and student participation in activities related to health and fitness.
McMillen Center for Health Education
Students visit the local McMillen Center for Health Education to participate in age-specific, health-related presentations.
Fall Athletics
5-8 Cross Country (co-ed)
Meets three times per week (including games).
5-6 Girls’ Volleyball
Meets three times per week (including games).
5-6 Boys’ Soccer
Meets two times per week (including games).
7-8 Boys’ Soccer
Meets three times per week (including games).
Thornhill Nature Preserve
Fifth-grade students participate in advisory bonding and cooperation activities.
Toledo Museum of Art/Providence Metropark Canal Boat and Isaac Ludwig Mill
Students explore and expand their knowledge in the areas of social studies, language arts, fine arts and science.
Jump Rope for Heart
Grades 5 and 6 take part in a jump rope marathon benefiting the American Heart Association.
Marengo Caves Field Trip
This overnight caving trip to southern Indiana coordinates with the sixth-grade science curriculum.
Camp Tecumseh
Grade 7 students travel to Camp Tecumseh for advisory bonding using the five foundations for success: trust, self-confidence, communication, problem-solving and leadership.
Eighth-Grade Trip
The class takes a trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., in late September each school year in coordination with the eighth-grade English and social studies curricula.
SECOND-QUARTER ACTIVITIES
Journal Gazette Allen County Spelling Bee
Students in grades 5 through 8 may participate in school practice and final rounds. The winner attends the Allen County Spelling Bee in February. This is an optional activity during the school day in November, December and January. There is a small fee for the optional practice book.
Winter Concert
Students enrolled in Middle School choir, band and orchestra present concerts at the end of each semester. The Winter Concert, on a weekday evening in December, provides an opportunity for students in these ensembles to perform publicly the music they have been studying in class. Concert attendance is a requirement for band, choir and orchestra students.
American Mathematics Competition
This test is administered in math classes for some fifth through eighth graders.
Winter Athletics
5-6 Boys’/Girls’ Basketball
Meets three times per week (including games).
5-8 Girls’ Cheerleading
Meets two to three times per week (including games). There is a fee for uniform rental.
7-8 Boys’/Girls’ Basketball
Meets three to four times per week (including games).
This afternoon of games, food and fun for all fifth and sixth graders is held after school in October.
THIRD-QUARTER ACTIVITIES
History Day
All eighth-grade students complete a research paper on one of the National Archives 100 Milestones documents in the fall. These papers then may be submitted to the national History Day competition in the historical essay category or used as the basis for an entry in another category.
Middle School Musical
Students in grades 5-8 may participate in the annual Middle School musical. Tryouts take place in mid-January, and the performance is staged in mid-March. The cast and crew typically number between 70 and 100 students.
Writers’ Conference
Just before Spring Break, fifth- and sixth-grade students present their writing in booklet form.
Science Fair
Seventh- and eighth-grade students prepare for the science fair in class throughout the fall. Their work culminates in an all-school fair in mid-February. Canterbury High School Advanced Placement students judge projects based on use of the scientific method. The five best projects are sent to the Northeast Indiana Regional Science Fair to compete at the end of March.
Future City Project
Eighth graders can opt to participate in the Future City Project in place of the science fair. Teams design and present their concepts of cities in the year 2200, using computer design, research, essay writing and multimedia presentation skills. The contest takes place at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne at the end of January.
Math COUNTS
Ten sixth, seventh and eighth graders compete as a team in this extracurricular mathematics competition. New mathematical concepts are explored.
FOURTH-QUARTER ACTIVITIES
This activity is available to all students after Spring Break during recesses.
Book Fair Visits
All Middle School students visit the Canterbury Spring Book Fair. Each class spends a period seeing the newest and best books available for their grade level.
Spring Concert
Students who are enrolled in Middle School band, choir and orchestra classes present concerts at the end of each semester. The Spring Concert takes place in late May or early June. Concert attendance is a requirement for students in band, choir and orchestra.

“A” golf for more experienced golfers (generally grades 7-8) meets three times per week (including matches). “B” golf for less experienced golfers (generally grades 5-6) meets two times per week.
5-8 Tennis (co-ed)
Meets two times per week (including games).
Zoo Trip
This sixth-grade service project is coordinated with residents of Covington Manor Nursing Home.
Field Day
Student teams compete for top honors in this spirited activity on the last day of school.
