“We are very pleased with the progress our children have made. We attribute this
to the individual attention they receive in their classes and the communication we receive from their teachers.”

About the Lower School
Children in Lower School are offered the excitement and challenge of new ideas while being guided in the mastery of basic skills. Here, a child’s personal development is as important as his or her academic progress. Foreign language and religious education foster an understanding of others and the world around us. The expansive fine arts program provides students with classroom work in music, drama and art, skills they can develop in school performances.

In Canterbury's Lower School, students are curious, lively, energetic and self-confident. Each day is designed to bring opportunities to engage in meaningful learning. Small classes allow each child to receive individual attention, to experience academic success, to grow socially and morally and to assume leadership and responsibility in the classroom. Canterbury faculty are noted for their knowledge, intellectual vitality, experience and concern for each student. A warm and nurturing family atmosphere permeates Lower School and enhances the growth of the whole child.
- Enrollment in each grade level consists of three classrooms of 16-18 students, enabling teachers to customize the level of academic challenge for each student. All Lower School students learn chess, stretching their minds through the games mental challenges.
- Foreign language study starts early. Students learn French through second grade; in third, they may continue French or embark upon Spanish lessons.
- All third graders receive instruction in string instruments, developing an appreciation for the fine arts.
- Third- and fourth-grade students participate in off-campus community service activities such as spending time with senior citizens at West Central Ministries or sorting and packing food at the Associated Churches Food Bank warehouse. These supplement schoolwide service projects that teach compassion, awareness and involvement.
- The Lower School Math Lab provides individual instruction for students needing additional support or a greater challenge.
