Learning Centers & Community Spaces

Canterbury’s commitment to excellence is reflected in a Campus Master Plan driven by two central beliefs: integrated learning opportunities are an essential component of a 21st century education; and independent schools possess unique qualities both as communities and as full college preparatory experiences.

Libraries and Learning Centers

At its best, a 21st century education will balance the rapidly expanding access to information and knowledge we enjoy today with a commitment to those traditional methods of teaching and learning that research has demonstrated to be most effective.

Libraries and computer labs will be integrated as research and learning centers, with students moving comfortably from print to online resources, from group instruction to individual research and investigation. Books and computers will become a gateway for exploration and discovery combining the enduring pleasures of the printed page and the extraordinary processing power of the microchip.

The school’s current commitment to wireless networks throughout the school and to the presentation benefits of SMART Boards or large-screen monitors linked to computers in every classroom will reinforce our belief in the benefits of accessible technology as an essential element of a Canterbury education today and tomorrow.

Community Spaces, Play Areas and Athletic Facilities

The strength of an independent school education is drawn as much from its life beyond the classroom as it is from formal classes and lessons. Small classes, advisory programs and a full range of extracurricular offerings, in which students are encouraged to participate, all nurture lasting relationships between students and their teachers.

Commons areas and enlarged gathering spaces will be constructed to maintain the distinctive nature of our school’s community. This setting serves as a critical element in preparation for the freedom and independence of college life and as a source of lifelong lessons and friendships.

Outdoor courtyards and play areas will be improved on both campuses, with redesigned playground spaces at Covington Road, an expanded varsity soccer field, and the completion of the south athletic fields on Glendale Drive.

"Canterbury builds character, and character is the final measure." - Canterbury Alum, Class of '90
