When asked why she supports Canterbury School, Julie
Waterfield’s answer is straightforward: “Our values and goals match.
Daily life at Canterbury is always rewarding and always
challenging…with daily priorities of integrity, teamwork, diligence,
respect, encouragement and consequences. My children always looked
forward to the school day – what more could I ask?”
Julie’s oldest child, Richard, enrolled at Canterbury in the school’s
second year, when it still was housed at Trinity Episcopal Church. He
graduated in 1990; Randy followed in 1992 and Jill in 1995. “My
children graduated with self-esteem and confidence,” Julie says.
Over the years, Julie’s family established three endowment funds. One
provides financial aid each year for two students, one supports the
fine arts department and one provides professional development
opportunities for the faculty. It is the last that is the closest to
Julie’s heart. Her passion for teaching comes naturally: Her parents
were teachers, and Julie taught English literature in the community.
Teachers “support our tomorrow,” she says, and it is through the
Waterfield Family Summer Grant program that she, in turn, supports
Canterbury teachers. “Teachers need to be replenished so they can
continue to give.”
“My trustee experience of balancing dreams with reality always
encourages my gifting, whether it is in time or other resources,” Julie
says. Making provisions to include Canterbury in her will was simple –
she used a percent that works for her. “Our goals dovetail, and I am
honored to include Canterbury School in my estate planning,” Julie
says. As a board trustee and active committee member, Julie continues
to work on behalf of our faculty, our students and our school – a
dedication that began in 1978. Thank you, Julie.
