Welcome to Canterbury School!

I hope very much that your visit to our Web site will be accompanied by a visit to our school. There is so much we want to share with you about what makes Canterbury a unique place for young people to go to school. And it all has to do with what we believe a college preparatory education should be.

Our primary emphasis is certainly on the classroom: a great teacher, a challenging curriculum, a carefully articulated sequence of courses. Small classes are designed both to motivate and to support student learning. Exploration, discovery and mastery of material are as important in Kindergarten as they are in Advanced Placement courses, college-level classes and senior seminars. We take learning very seriously.

Yet learning also occurs beyond the classroom, and Canterbury students are very busy people. They are athletes and actors and artists; they are taught to be leaders as well as servants in their communities; they learn to be responsible, to be respectful and to be caring. This is a community that works and works together.

The fabric of our school is woven from the expectations we set – an honor code, Chapel messages, school dress requirements. Yet the texture and color of our life together emerge as relationships are built, friendships are made and commitments are established. These will be the qualities that sustain Canterbury students as they move on to college experiences and to productive and fulfilling lives. These are the qualities that we would like to share with you both in this Web site and in your visit to Canterbury.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Hancock

Headmaster
