Canterbury is distinctive in many ways. Of prominence is our curriculum. Foreign language studies begin early and diversify across a child’s education to include Spanish, French and Japanese, as well as Latin instruction. The fine arts thrive as students create in the style of master artists, take the stage and harmonize with strings, brass or voice. Science and mathematics are exploratory, rigorous and individualized in preparation for college academics. All-inclusive athletics policies allow children to discover talents and develop interests. Spoken presentations, re-enactments and student-published literary works bring English and historical instruction to life. All spring from small class sizes that allow interaction and involvement.
Our community is distinctive as well. Canterbury was founded by parents, and parents continue to be the life force in the school’s continual quest for excellence, lending their talents, hands and hearts to many causes. Teachers, students and families form a support network that nurtures each child and frees him or her to reach ever higher. Our school community participates in the greater community as well: Community service is not only a requirement but a commitment, one that often far exceeds requirements in keeping with the basic Christian principles of our school.
Our faculty is composed of highly educated and extremely dedicated professionals. Their careers include doctoral degrees, foreign studies, research, invention, leadership roles and experience in a variety of fields. They bring this varied and impressive expertise to their classrooms along with a spirit of excitement and challenge.
Most distinctive is our student body. They are a diverse group – diverse in age, interests, race, ethnicity, family environment, economic standing, talents and goals. What they share in common is a respect for each other and for learning, a drive to achieve and a record of success. Each student’s distinctive contribution and growth is celebrated, not only in academics but in character – encouraging and teaching integrity in all things.
