CANTERBURY THIS WEEK November 10, 2017 | Issue 5 Building Teen Confidence through Shakespeare The Middle School Shakespeare as Performance class is more than a drama class. It's also a way for students to build their confidence. Ranae Butler, teacher and Fine Arts Department chair, explained that Shakespeare was written to be performed and movement is an important component in learning the intimidating dialogue. "I find that if they can move, we can get that language into their bodies and they feel a sense of freedom." On the video you'll hear multiple groups of students loudly practicing their lines at the same time. Mrs. Butler instructs all the students in class to pair up and practice the same scene, in the same space, over and over again. "The students find ownership in the words and develop self-confidence," she said. Later in the video you will see one group's interpretation of the scene. Watch the video at www.canterburyschool.org/students-parents/news. Canterbury Fact: Shakespeare's lessons and a love for the dialogue carry over to the High School. Students have been involved in the Shakespeare Slam workshops and competed in the Shakespeare Slam in Chicago last weekend. Their dream scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream was mentioned by many competing teams as one of the event's most memorable moments. High School students also produce a spring Shakespeare play.
