Model UN students practice diplomacy

Image

Canterbury HS students attended the Earlham Model UN Conference January 27-28, in Richmond, IN.  The Model UN Conference provides a framework for student participants to simulate the United Nations work sessions. Goals include providing a deeper understanding of multilateral diplomacy; strengthening negotiation and leadership skills; and improving the ability to anticipate evolving scenarios of complex issues. Participants are required to act like real UN delegates partaking in sessions of various UN committees. Each participant in a committee represents a different country. Each student delegate has to work, faithfully respecting the assigned country's standpoint, to obtain the approval of documents that favor the assigned country and the collective interest. During the Earlham Model UN Conference, the Canterbury delegates received the following awards:

Best Delegation - 1st Place

  • Rishubh Jain and Akash Meesa, representing Canada

Coach Brothers Finalist for Double Goal Coach Awards

The Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) announced the that Canterbury Golf Coach Bob Brothers was a national finalists for the Double-Goal Coach awards. Nominees are assessed on the extent to which they reflect the model of a Double-Goal Coach, whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports. According to the PCA a Double-Goal Coach does the following:

  • Takes a mastery approach to sport rather than a scoreboard orientation, teaching athletes to make maximum effort, continuously learn and improve, and not let themselves be stopped by mistakes or fear of mistakes.
  • Fills Emotional Tanks of athletes, refusing to motivate through fear, intimidation, or shame. Recognizing that a player's "Emotional Tank," like the gas tank of a car, must be full in order to go anywhere, the Double-Goal Coach provides a fuel mixed of five specific, truthful praises for every specific, constructive correction.
  • Honors the Game by respecting ROOTS (Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, Self).
