K-12 Grade Chess Championships

Date and Time
Saturday, November 10, 2012. Doors open at 8 a.m. Players should arrive by 8:30 a.m. A players’ meeting will be held at 8:45 a.m, and games will begin shortly thereafter. Anyone not at a board by 9:15 a.m. may be forfeited or re-paired. Awards will be given as soon as possible after the last round of play.
All Pre-K through Grade 12 Indiana students, including home-schooled students, may participate. Adult supervision is required for ages up to 12 years.
Compete only against those in your grade. Thirteen separate divisions for grades K-12. (Exceptions: Pre-K students will be considered as part of the Kindergarten division. Other grades may play together if there are not enough players; however, trophies and prizes will be awarded for each grade separately.)
Entry Fee and Deadlines: Participation limited to the first 350 to apply.
Entry fee is $17 for those entries postmarked by Friday, November 2. Late entry fee is $20. Email and phone entries will be accepted if made by Friday, November 9st. Fees must be received by Friday, November 9. Entries will not be official until receipt of fees. Late entries may be accepted if time and space permit. No registration on site. No refunds on site. Refunds in full if requested before November 2. Entries will be posted at: http://canterburychess.org.
Rounds and Time Controls
Each division will have five rounds with 40/SD time controls. (Exception: sections with less than 16 players may play 4 rounds.) Two-minute deduction if not notating in grades 4 and above. In the event of a 5-0 tie, there will be a five-minute blitz playoff among the undefeated players. Ties for first place will be considered “co-champions”, but trophies and prizes will be awarded based upon tie breaks, or if applicable, the blitz playoff.
First-place winners of grades K-12 will receive a $75 gift certificate from chesshouse.com. Second place will receive a $50 gift certificate, and third-place will receive a $25 savings gift certificate. Gift certificates and table and chair rental provided by SPD Textile & Drapery Inc.
Trophies will be awarded for each grade separately.
USCF Certified Event
All players must be current members of USCF (US Chess Federation) for this tournament to be USCF certified. If you are not a current USCF member, USCF membership fees are required with entry fees. The October USCF rating supplement will be used to determine each player’s rating. This event is sanctioned by ISCA (Indiana State Chess Association) in cooperation with SCI (Scholastic Chess of Indiana).
USCF Membership Plans
Junior Tournament Membership (third grade and below): Free through third grade, without any publications. (Note: This membership is not good for any National tournaments, but is good for primary sections of state tournaments, and does not need to be renewed until fourth grade. Not available for players who already have a paid USCF membership number.)
Scholastic Membership (12 yrs or younger): $17 for 1 year, with online access to Chess Life for Kids
Youth Membership (15 yrs or younger):$22 for 1 year, with online access to Chess Life
Young Adult Membership (24 yrs or younger): $25 for 1 year, with online access to Chess Life

What to Bring
Participants are encouraged to bring their own chess sets, board and clock (if desired). Food concessions open all day.
