Early Childhood Application      Grades K-12 Application


Applicants are encouraged to apply to Canterbury School early in the school year. When all application forms are received and a school visit and testing are complete, the admission committee will evaluate the materials and act upon the application. (Notification of the decision will be made after March 1 for Kindergarten applicants.) If the applicant is accepted, a contract will be sent and must be signed and returned with the required fees by the designated date. Once a grade is full, names of applicants for that grade are placed in a waiting pool. 

Occasionally, a grade may have openings during the school year. As they occur, these openings may be filled from the pool of qualified applicants.

Admission decisions are based on the school’s commitment to its stated mission of academic excellence, cultural and ethnic diversity, and the recognition of special talents.

The Admission Application Process

1. Application form: The application must be completed and sent to the admissions office accompanied by a nonrefundable fee and a recent photograph to begin the admission process. Fees are $75 for Kindergarten and $35 for Early Childhood and grades 1-12. Online applications are available for your convenience.

2. Transcript:
The applicant or the applicant's school should send current transcript or school record from the applicant’s current school to the admissions office. (This is not necessary for Early Childhood applicants.)

3. Letters of recommendation: Two or three recommendations are required. Confidential recommendation forms will be mailed directly to the references listed on the student’s application to be completed and returned to Canterbury. (This is not necessary for Early Childhood applicants.)

4. Admission test: Testing is required of all applicants. This includes general aptitude and achievement tests prepared by the Education Records Bureau (ERB). No special preparation is required. For Kindergarten, developmental and aptitude assessments are given. (This is not necessary for Early Childhood applicants.)

5. Student visits: Applicants requesting admission to grades 5-8 (Middle School) and 9-12 (High School) are required to spend at least one day attending classes at Canterbury. Applicants requesting admission to grades 1-4 (Lower School) typically spend two days at Canterbury. Kindergarten applicants visit for half of a day. Early Childhood visits are scheduled for 45 minutes in the classroom with parent and child.

Canterbury School is an independent, co-educational day school serving students in early childhood through Grade 12. Its program emphasizes both academic challenges and personal development through small classes and an experienced faculty.
