A Day Away with Mrs. Fallon: Project Linus www.projectlinus.com 260-749-6595
This past school year Canterbury took its commitment to the community to a whole new level, implementing A Day Away program. This program encourages each faculty member to research a nonprofit organization in which he or she has an interest and then to spend “a day away” from school volunteering. The program also raises awareness about different volunteer opportunities in the community.
Sharon Fallon, Middle School librarian, volunteered with Project Linus to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need. Project Linus provides gifts of handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” Mrs. Fallon explained, “I had no idea what a big operation this is. Project Linus has a house full of supplies, many sewing machines, cutting tables, fabric, sewing supplies and even a metal detector to catch any stray pins. I did all types of jobs, even a little sewing. The people were great. What could be better than helping to keep children safe and warm. The “blanketeers” are selfless and inspirational to be around.”
